The GI Bill and some timely advice from an unlikely advisor provided the opportunity for
James Thorpe to find his life's vocation. After securing his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University Of Cincinnati he went on to earn a Masters degree from The University of Kentucky and a PHD degree from The University of Pittsburgh. His occupational history included a stint at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory
in the early 60's where he taught Nuclear Engineering technology to Admiral
Rickovers submarine cadets and over 30 years as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UK & UC.
I had a high school science teacher who would often use the phrase
"...the thirst for knowledge..." That phrase will never be used more appropriately than it would be in describing
Dr. Thorpe.
After retirement he decided on acrylic painting as his hobby and attacked it with his prototypical single mindedness.
Since that time he has produced well over 200 pieces covering a wide
range of creativity.
I present here, an assortment
and the majority of the artwork he has produced in his retirement.
